The provincial minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, delivered the keynote address at the 10-year celebration of the Southern Africa Georgia Chamber of Commerce (SAGCC) at Kloovenburg Wine Estate in Riebeek-Kasteel last Thursday (17 July).

Over the past decade, the chamber has been a catalyst for meaningful partnerships and transformative initiatives, Meyer stated.

“One of the most remarkable examples is the South Africa-Georgia Winemaker Exchange Programme, which has seen the participation of approximately 40 South African winemakers, many of whom are emerging talents, and 26 Georgian winemakers. This programme has not only enriched our wine industries, but has also deepened the bonds of friendship and understanding between our nations.”

Wineries such as Kloovenburg, Robertson, Van Loveren, Stellar Organics, Excelsior and Graham Beck have actively participated, with the iconic Groot Constantia Wine Estate now joining this esteemed group.

South Africa continues to enjoy a positive trade balance with Georgia.

In May this year, exports to Georgia totalled R14,2 million, while imports from Georgia stood at R3,46 million, resulting in a trade surplus of R 10,7 million. These figures reflect a healthy and evolving trade relationship, with opportunities for growth and diversification in both directions.

Said Meyer: “As we celebrate this 10-year milestone let us reaffirm our commitment to collaboration, innovation, and shared success. Let’s continue to build bridges, not only of commerce, but of culture, knowledge, and friendship.”
