Avid walkers can look forward to toasting to spectacular views while savouring the moment by sipping on fine wine with Dirtopia Trail Centre’s sunset to full moon hike on Wednesday (16 March).
A circular hiking trail has been constructed by Dirtopia and runs from the trail centre at Muratie Wine Farm (located on Knorhoek Road, off the R44 outside Stellenbosch), to a viewpoint with picturesque spectacular views of the winelands and Table Mountain in the distance. The adventure continues when hikers walk back through the forest with headlamps.
There are signs along the single-track route which is about 3,5 km and can take around 30 minutes to tough out; up to 45 minutes to reach the picnic spot. Please ensure, you do not arrive later than 18:15 to ensure that you have the full experience as the moonrise is scheduled at 18:25 with sunset at 19:00. It requires only 20-30 minutes to walk back to the trail centre. Bring a blanket to sit on while you wait for the sunset or moonrise under the watchful eye of the Simonsberg mountain. The look-out point is called Gilloolys, where participants can enjoy a self-packed picnic and wine. Snacks and drinks will be on offer at the trail centre where permits can be collected on arrival. A coffee station will be open until 20:30. Participants are implored to arrive from 17:30, no later than 18:15 to start the hike. The cost is R100 per person and R50 for children under 1 years. Remember, bring something warm to wear after dark and a torch, wear good walking or hiking shoes to climb the mountain with over 200 wooden steps and various terrain. A Falke sock hamper is up for grabs in a lucky draw.
