A good Samaritan was shot and killed in Ilingelethu, Malmesbury when he tried to assist a robbery suspect at the scene of an accident.

According to Sergeant Henry du Randt, a local police spokesperson, police received a frantic call late Saturday of a person shot in Chris Hani Street. On their arrival at the scene the victim, the 42-year-old Monelisi Booi had already been taken to hospital.

As the police tried to get information from members of the public the call came from the hospital that Booi had died following a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.

According to witnesses on the scene, the manager of a licensed pub in Ilingelethu was closing up and got into his vehicle when a man with a firearm opened the driver’s door and assaulted him over his head. He ran back into the pub. The suspect tried to drive off in the vehicle but collided with an electric street lamp. At that point Booi, who lived opposite the pub, was reversing out in his vehicle and got out to see whether he could be of any assistance to the person behind the wheel of the Toyota Hilux bakkie that had crashed into the street lamp. The suspect got out of the bakkie, shot Booi once in the chest and took off in his red Volkswagen Polo CK13572.
