Following the death of two protesters yesterday in Caledon,
the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed two
protesters were shot during the public protest.
Moses Dlamini, IPID spokesperson, said it is alleged that on
4 April there was a protest by members of the community in the area. “Members
of the SAPS, security guards and Law Enforcement were deployed to monitor the
protest. It is alleged that two protesters were fatally wounded during an
attempt to disperse the protesters.”
Dlamini said IPID investigators arrived after the scene was
cleared, due to the volatile situation and the long distance they had to drive.
“At this stage it has not yet been established who shot the
protesters,” he said. “A post-mortem will be held to glean more information
about the shooting.”
The spokesperson said the firearms of all the police,
security guards and law enforcement were confiscated and taken for ballistic
testing.
“The investigation continues,” Dlamini said. “No arrest has
been made.”
