Unemployed locals eager to run households in hopes of earning a living are implored to upskill at the Helderberg Development Centre (HDC), which offers skills development training in Home Management.
HCD is a Section 18A non-profit organisation aimed at making a long-term difference in the alleviation of poverty in local communities. It strives to give unemployed people from adverse backgrounds, especially those who live in extreme conditions of poverty, the opportunity for skills training. “We want to empower them with life skills, as well as career-oriented and entrepreneurial skills.
Since HDC’s establishment in Somerset West in 2002, the organisation has trained 2 142 students, presented 194 courses and employed 33 facilitators. On average, more than 80% of HDC students have been successfully assisted in finding jobs and improving their standards of living.
People 25 years and older, and with a basic competency in English (medium of instruction) are welcome to enrol for the five-week Home Management training programme. Subjects include life orientation, kitchen skills, cleaning skills and laundry skills. The students are supported by HCD’s Student Support office in securing full-time employment after completion of their course, empowering them to become financially independent. For more information on the course, contact Thandi on 021 852 5720.
HCD also offers skills training courses in child minding, family meals and sewing skills for individuals looking to sharpen their abilities in these activities.
