Since 2014 the NPO Turn Around 180 has worked with the homeless and destitute around Strand and Gordon’s Bay.
The organsation does way more than just get the homeless back on their feet; they assist with social integration, employment, reconnecting families and provide a form of therapy and counselling to those on the streets too.
Manager of Turn Around Susie Pedro and field worker Bevan Alloys explained they apply interventions whenever necessary, build relationships with those that are vulnerable and untrusting, and also help obtain identity documents and access medical assistance.
“All needs are different and we start by understanding the issues,” Pedro said. “We assist with fresh clothes and a shower, teach the homeless to keep the spaces they live in clean, and try to change the perception of the public towards them.”
Alloys added the destitute are also enrolled and engaged in a support group so their emotional needs are also addressed. A weekly Wednesday service allows religious interaction, after which a hearty meal is served.
Turn Around has also established a life-skills programme and an after-care for children affected by homelessness.
Said Alloys: “There are different types of homeless people, some born into poverty, others having lost jobs or homes, some being drug addicts, while others are job seekers taking up positions as car guards, and so on. We help all of them.”
Turn Around has also established an aluminium-can recycling drive, in partnership with The 80s Bar in Strand, in which funds are raised for its programmes, and the organisation has also appealed to other businesses to follow suit.
Turn Around currently operates its admin, collections and other work from premises in Strand, where it hopes more volunteers will join and funds will be raised to assist them in their plight to fight homelessness.
“Especially in light of an upcoming winter, we would really appreciate all the help we can get,” Pedro said. “We also want to place baskets at schools where people can put old clothes, blankets and food, which we then will distribute. Please get in touch with us.
“It’s important to know there is help, that this is a place that will give you direction. We are not well known, so this type of awareness is important”.
Pedro also advised that the community be aware that Turn Around operates entirely separately from Second Chance, which also assists the destitute. “We are also located next to each other, so please ensure your donation goes to the right place,” she said.
