The coronavirus outbreak, and subsequent necessary lockdown period implemented by the government, has left everybody reeling. For none is this more true than the most vulnerable members of our society, who depend mainly on casual work and daily wages, and now find themselves without money or food.In every town across the country businesses, religious organisations and private individuals have collaborated with charitable and relief agencies to try and alleviate this problem, particularly by handing out food parcels to those most in need.In Greyton, a Food Emergency Committee representing various organisations, churches and individuals has identified more than 1 000 people (families and individuals) without income, pension or social grants in the town itself and other towns – Heuwelkroon, Voorstekraal, Bereaville, Genadendal and Boschmanskloof – who will be assisted with food parcels. The Greyton Red Cross has been tasked with leading this relief effort.
