Taking place at the Houw Hoek Hotel this coming weekend, the organisers of the Thirsti AfricanX Trailrun three-day stage race are calling on entrants to send through their nominations for the event’s cherished Sanet Wentzel Spirit Award.
“Sanet Wentzel was an Oudtshoorn-based athlete who took part in the inaugural Thirsti AfricanX Trailrun three-day stage race in 2009,” Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and founder of the Thirsti AfricanX Trailrun, explained.
“Sanet enjoyed the race to the fullest that year and could not wait to toe the line again in 2010. Sadly, this dream did not come true as Sanet had died tragically at the end of 2009; she was knocked down by a car during a morning training run.
“In memory of this fallen athlete we founded the ‘Sanet Wentzel Spirit Award’ in 2010.
Meyer said the trophy honoured entrants who persevered irrespective of the adversity they faced. Each year the trail running community is called on to help identify the perfect recipient of the award.
Trail runners who have entered the 2022 event are encouraged to send their nominations to entries@stillwatersports.com by Wednesday (16 March).
