Bowlers from three northern suburbs clubs reigned supreme in the prestigious Western Province Masters tournament held last weekend with an exceptional performance.
Powerhouse Durbanville Bowling Club led the pack by winning three of the possible six titles, as well as numerous bronze medals.
Kevin Smith won the veteran men’s category, Lydia Maritz the veteran women’s category and Karen van Noort the invitational category for women.
Goodwood and Oakdale won one each of the remaining three titles.
Protea star Aneke Snyman (Goodwood) won the women’s open category, beating Claire Cowan (Mowbray) with 21-9.
Helio Andrade (Oakdale) rounded off the northern’s sweep by winning gold in the final of the Invitational Men’s category. He beat Ferdie Alves (Goodwood) with 21-16.
The other 30 or so clubs in the Western Province only won one title among them.
Lefthander Nic Rusling (WPCC) was the only “non-northerner” to win a title. He beat Herman Huisamen (also Goodwood) with 21-11 in the final of the men’s open category.
Open tournament
For the masters, Western Province selectors pick 12 players in each of four catagories (open men and women, veteran men and women) to play over two days against each other.
The open tournament took place in Durbanville and the veterans at Constantia.
The 12 elite players were divided into two groups of six each, thus playing five matches in the round robin with the two group winners playing each other in the finals.
An invitational masters competition also took place in Somerset West. For this WP selectors picked young and upcoming men and women players.
The veterans men final at Constantia between wirery Durbanville legend Etienne “ET” Malherbe and Kevin “Doc” Smith was one for the bowling ages.
Malherbe, a tennis coach, and Smith, a dentist and brilliant golfer, displayed all their ample ball sense, as well as mutual respect and affection.
They matched each other draw-for-draw.
However, Malherbe’s driving prowess, his main weapon in winning close tussles in the round robin, let him down in the final.
Eventually dentist Smith drew Malherbe’s teeth… in a manner of speaking.
In the last, 21st end, he brilliantly drew to the jack which Malberbe had torpedoed into the gutter to clinch the match 17-14.
