On Friday 12 April Swartland Municipality hosted its first-ever Discipline Starts at Home Conference.

Attended by representatives of various institutions, NGOs and local schools, its purpose was to give feedback on the Discipline Starts At Home Initiative, which has been running for almost a year.

Its creator, renowned educational psychologist Quinton Adams, has actively assisted Swartland Municipality with the project’s implementation. He has provided training and support to all who have participated.

The programme focuses on seven pillars that are key in creating a positive and disciplined environment, namely communication, respect, telling right from wrong, authority, responsibility and caring.

Teachers and coaches are instructed in these concepts and are also taught how to teach these concepts and what it means in terms of discipline in homes and schools. Almost 500 people have now received training.

On Friday, two early-childhood development (ECD) principals gave feedback on how the project has positively impacted not only their school environment, but also the home environment of children. In the coming months this project will be rolled out to high schools in the Swartland region.
