Selwyn Manuel started the The All Star Foundation to promote soccer through outreach programmes across the Helderberg in 2019, and it has steadily grown to impact dozens of kids from the communities of Broadlands Village, Sercor Park, Gustrouw, Macassar, Strand and Somerset West.

It provides a platform for youth to become part of a team, and also opportunities to further develop their skills to be candidates for scouts at soccer tournaments.

Manuel himself used to be a soccer player and played for a couple of years at De Beers Academy, but said an injury forced him to quit aspirations as a player.

Early in 2019 he was approached by several youngsters wanting to play the game socially and among friends, and he was pitched the idea to start outreach programmes to garner the interest of the younger generation.

“I discussed the idea with friends and colleagues, and they sponsored equipment such as cones, poles, bibs and soccer balls. I basically drive into areas, find an open field and unpack the equipment. Kids of all ages come play, practise and learn the game. It’s very casual, but also picking up pace at a significant rate,” he said.

“I want to make a difference in the community. My motto is that I do it for the love of the game, for love of people and for the love of God.”

The All Stars Foundation already has an established team that participates in a Sunday church league, and it is now working towards building junior teams as per requirement to join other leagues in the greater Cape Town area.

As is with all other endeavours, they’ve had to tackle some obstacles and continue to do so.

One of their biggest challenges is finding suitable sports fields to play the game, as most are already occupied weekends by local rugby teams.

Manuel explained: “We’ve had to jump hurdles and break open doors, and continue to do so. The support from the community and parents is vital to our success, as well as the support from sponsors. However, we continue to grow and for that we’re very grateful.”

Manuel stresses there are opportunities for youngsters, and SAFA representatives are continuously searching for new talent.

He has built relationships with some soccer scouts, and this can open a whole new world of possibilities.

“I’m very optimistic and positive about all things in life and this is now different. The foundation has really taken off this year and there’s definitely a growing interest in soccer in the Helderberg.”

Manuel’s vision for the future is to establish various teams in all underprivileged communities in the basin, and appoint coaching staff through which he can assist and support them.
