Beat the winter chill with some musical delight on 25 July when the Delta Soetstemme, from Franschhoek, will share the stage with the Zolani Youth Choir for a day of cultural and musical exchange.
The event will start with a late morning workshop at the KWV Binnehof, and ending in a late afternoon concert at the Montagu Museum.
Over the last decade or so Franschhoek wine farm Solms Delta’s unique empowerment programme has turned the farm into one of South Africa’s most progressive wine estates, where the workers’ trust now has a 33% equity stake.
There is also a parallel trust creating projects in education, cultural heritage, social upliftment, sport and recreation. This has spawned several musical ensembles including the Delta Langbroeke, a brass band, and the Delta Soetstemme, an exciting 20-piece choir ensemble, which has acquired a reputation for really getting people’s feet tapping.
The Delta Soetstemme will be performing their mixture of traditional songs, including some new songs written in Cape vernacular styles by choir members and tutors. The choir will be backed by a four piece band.
Concert goers will also be entertained by the Zolani Youth Choir, which was created in 2012 by the formidable Odwa Mvunge who was born in Zolani, schooled in the Eastern Cape and returned to Ashton as a school teacher after completing a Music Diploma (Vocal training) at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
Inspired by his experience with the NMMU choir, with whom he travelled internationally, he founded Zolani Youth Choir with the specific purpose of educating youngsters in the performing arts and to demonstrate to the local community the value of dedication.
This choir performs electrifying South African sounds, with a distinctly African perspective, including hymns, freedom songs, traditional and popular music.
The day will kick off with a free workshop at 11:30 on Saturday morning at the KWV Binnehof, where local choirs will each present a song.
The concert starts at 16:00. Tickets cost R100 for adults (includes a complimentary muscadel) and R20 for children.
