Gqeberha’s courageous K9, “Night,” has been discharged from the Walmer Veterinary Hospital and is set to make a full recovery after being injured during a housebreaking incident in Providentia on April 21.
Night, who sustained severe injuries while apprehending a suspect, will remain “off duty” for three weeks as he recovers at the Gqeberha K9 unit under close care.
Warrant Officer Damian Theron, Night’s handler, expressed relief as the two were reunited earlier today. “Night was clearly thrilled to see me, and it’s a relief to have him back. He’s a fighter, and I have no doubt he’ll be ready to protect the community again soon,” said WO Theron.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday, April 21, when K9 Night and WO Theron responded to a call about a housebreaking in progress at Woodside Grove, Providentia. Arriving at the scene, SAPS members learned that trespassers had broken into the house while the owners were out of town. After giving the necessary warnings with no response, WO Theron deployed Night to search the dark premises.
During the search, a suspect hiding in a cupboard attempted to flee toward a window. Night heroically intercepted the suspect but sustained severe injuries when the suspect broke a glass window and forced the dog’s head toward the shards. Night suffered two lacerations to his throat and neck as well as a cut to his paw. Despite his injuries, the courageous K9 managed to apprehend the suspect, who was later arrested on charges of housebreaking and trespassing.
WO Theron acted quickly to save Night’s life. “I noticed the blood and immediately knew something was wrong. I removed him and wrapped my jersey around his neck to stop the bleeding before rushing him to the veterinary hospital,” Theron explained.
Gqeberha police have expressed gratitude to Walmer Veterinary Services and Dr Campher for their prompt action, ensuring Night received life-saving treatment. Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg commended all involved. “We are immensely thankful for the dedication of the veterinary team and for WO Theron’s quick thinking under pressure. Night displayed incredible bravery, proving yet again how vital K9 units are in law enforcement.”

The suspect (21) was also treated for minor injuries before being detained at SAPS Walmer and is expected to appear at the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court later this week.
While Night’s injuries were severe, his stable condition and discharge signal a positive recovery ahead. “The community of Gqeberha owes Night a debt of gratitude for his service and bravery. He is more than just a K9; he’s a vital member of the team and a true hero,” added Janse van Rensburg.
As Night takes time to heal, the Gqeberha K9 unit remains committed to continuing its essential work in protecting and serving the community.
