Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, members of the provincial Cabinet and head of provincial departments took part in the Western Cape Government Cycle Tour for 2022.
During the tour they handed out bicycles to neighbourhood watches in the West Coast, to assist with community safety and patrolling. More than 100 bicycles were handed out during the tour.
Several neighbourhood watches in the Swartland area received bicycles including the Moorreesburg, Koringberg, Riebeek Valley and Darling Neighbourhood Watches.
At the last handover in Darling on Friday morning, a minute of silence was observed in memory of Tristan Korah, from the Darling NHW, who recently lost his life while volunteering with the NHW. Winde and West Coast Mayor Harold Cleophas thanked the Darling NHW for their dedication in helping to make their community safer.
Cleophas also thanked the sponsors Qhubeka, Pedal Power Association & Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) for making this donation possible.
He said: “We are incredibly grateful for every volunteer who plays part of their local Neighbourhood Watch, to increase visible policing on the ground. Visible policing is a proven deterrent for criminal activity. And these bicycles will help our volunteers be more visible and effective.”
