Beware of theft out of motor vehicles

The Goodwood area has recently been tainted by theft out of motor vehicles. This came to light after the Goodwood police made two arrests two days apart in connection with theft out of motor vehicles.

On Tuesday 5 April at approximately 07:00 a complainant realised that his motor vehicle was broken into and his toolbox with tools was stolen. The complainant allegedly looked down the road in Jagger Street, Goodwood, and saw a man pushing a trolley with his toolbox inside the trolley. He followed the suspect to a nearby address and called the police.

Const Lovedalia Bele responded to the complaint and found the owner waiting outside the suspect’s address. Bele found the stolen box of tools in the suspect’s possession and arrested him.

The Goodwood police arrested a 59-year-old man for theft out of a motor vehicle.

Two days later, on Thursday 7 April at 17:45, the owner of a Toyota Corolla parked his vehicle in Smart Road. Minutes later the car’s alarm was activated.

The owner investigated and saw the suspect inside his vehicle. When he approached the vehicle the suspect jumped out with two loaves of bread in her hands.

The owner gave chase and managed to apprehend the suspect.

Const Keenan Moss responded to the complaint and the suspect was handed to him.

The swift reaction from the complainant secured the arrest of a 26-year-old woman for theft out of a motor vehicle.

Both suspects appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on charges of theft out of a motor vehicle. Moreover, one suspect were arrested in connection with common robbery. On Thursday 7 April at about 14:30 a male Goodwood resident was walking in Voortrekker Road when the suspect asked him for money. When he gave the money the suspect grabbed his hand and took a ring from his pinky, threatening him with violence.

The suspect then demanded the complainant’s cellphone, but the complainant managed to free himself and run away.

A member of the public who witnessed the robbery apprehended the suspect and handed him to Goodwood police.

A 36-year-old known suspect appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court for common robbery. The station commander of Goodwood police, Col Henry Hubbard, praised the member of the public for not turning a blind eye to crime.
