Bergrivier Municipality has recently been rated by Good Governance Africa (GGA) as the second best municipality for 2021 in South Africa.
A total of 205 local municipalities formed part of the Good Performance Index (GPI). They were measured and rated based on their performance in three governance categories, namely administration, service delivery and planning and monitoring.
“We are extremely proud of this incredible achievement,” said Alderman Ray van Rooy, Executive Mayor of Bergrivier Municipality. “It’s a true honour for us to be rated second best in the country, and I cannot thank our Council, administration and the public enough for their contributions towards creating a prosperous Bergrivier Municipality. Service delivery is our passion and all decisions we take is for the benefit of our communities.”
Good Governance Africa is an independent company conducting research on various organisations from across the globe via studies, and using data collection methods and analytics, to issue fair and accurate performance ratings.
It is clear the Western Cape is at the forefront of local government in South Africa, with 13 of its municipalities in the Top 20.
“Bergrivier Municipality has featured in the Top 10 Best Municipalities list for the last nine years, ” said Adv. Hanlie Linde, Municipal Manager of Bergrivier Municipality. “In 2016 we were ranked the third best municipality in South Africa. We are constantly striving towards creating a prosperous community where all want to live, work, learn and play in a dignified manner.

Van Rooy mentioned that ethical and competent leadership, political stability and a well-organised and involved community plays a major role in ensuring that a local municipality is effective and properly governed. “Ultimately, local government is the first point of contact between the state and its citizens,” he said, “and this is where we can make direct, meaningful and positive differences in people’s lives.
