Sometimes one doesn’t see the red flags until one is in the role, but you can look out for some signs during the interview process.

If the interviewer talks negatively about the person who had previously held your position or about anyone on the team, it’s a huge red flag.

Hiring managers who don’t trust their employees and micromanage may be hesitant to let you connect with other people on the team you would be working with.

During the interview process, you should ask whether you’ll be required to sign any agreements before you start. According to HuffPost, if they hide the information they’re probably going to make you sign something like a “non-compete” that will make it difficult for you to find another job once you leave.

Forbes magazine recommends people focus on asking the right questions, listen and interpret verbal answers. They should also observe and interpret non-verbal responses.

You should be concerned when the interview is suspiciously short, the interviewer does not ask the necessary questions and lets you go early.

When they ask you questions, but don’t give you time to ask questions about them in return it is a red flag.

One Reddit user had this to say: “We’re all family here. Code for: we’ll exploit your loyalty and blur the boundaries between personal and professional so you feel obligated. Then, Mark from accounts will feel you up at the Christmas party like a creepy uncle.”

Another user added: “Not interview-related, but beware of companies with significantly higher salaries than most other companies in your industry. There’s a reason they have to pay more to retain their talent.” – W24.
