YeBoneers from the Swartland region, supported by their implementing partner Hope Through Action/SCORE, recently returned from the #GoBeyond25: Shape Your Future Youth Conference energised, inspired and ready to take on new challenges.
The conference, held at the University of the Western Cape from Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 July, brought together more than 1 000 young people and partners from across South Africa, a statement from the Swartland Community Sport Centre (SCSC) stated. The youth are part of the YearBeyond National Youth Service programme, which provides meaningful work experience to more than 3 000 youth annually. The “YeBoneers”, as those running it are dubbed, have impacted the lives of more than 30 000 learners, children and communities.
Representing the YearBeyond Hope Through Action/SCORE @HomeLearning, Little Explorers ECD and Catch-Up Programme streams, the Swartland YeBoneers engaged in a dynamic programme featuring keynote speakers, panel discussions, workshops and creative fringe activities. It aimed to equip young leaders with the skills, confidence and mindset needed to thrive in their communities and beyond.
For Ovayo Swartbooi of Little Explorers ECD Stream the conference was a source of deep inspiration. “The YeBo conference was an inspiring experience filled with valuable insights, meaningful connections and thought-provoking discussions,” she reflected.
Swartbooi’s words capture the conference’s spirit, encouraging young people to believe in their own power and purpose, no matter the obstacles they face. Among the many highlights was the Study Expo, where YeBoneers connected with over 24 tertiary institutions, exploring study options and gaining valuable advice on next steps after their YearBeyond service.
Another Swartland YeBoneer, Janiya Cleophas from @HomeLearning Stream, found several sessions especially impactful. “I truly enjoyed the conference and am grateful for the lessons I learned from the speakers,” she shared. “The session ‘Studying as Your Next Step’ taught me that resilience in the face of failure is crucial, setbacks are stepping stones to growth. I also loved ‘Rooted in Care – A Yoga Practice’, which helped me calm my mind and find relief from daily stress.”
The Swartland YeBoneers’ experience illustrates the power of providing spaces where young people can connect deeply, grow their skills and feel valued. Through workshops, mentorship and community building, the conference reminded YeBoneers that their voices matter and their potential is limitless.
As the YearBeyond Hope Through Action/SCORE YeBoneers return to their schools, crèches and communities they bring back more than just new skills; they carry a renewed confidence, compassion and a strong commitment to leading and uplifting others.
For them #GoBeyond25 was not just a milestone; it was the beginning of an exciting new chapter of growth and impact.
